Southside Regional Medical Center
Southside Virginia's newest hospital, the
Southside
Regional Medical Center (SRMC), opened its doors in July
2008. Located in Petersburg on Wagner Road at the I-95
interchange, the 420,000-square-foot facility has 300 beds
but is licensed for 408 and will expand to meet community
needs. The state-of-the-art hospital features the very
latest in technology, patient amenities and architectural
designs:
- The hospital's eight operating rooms, as well as the
trauma and cardiac departments, are equipped with
high-definition TVs and digital imaging equipment.
- A pneumatic tube system allows laboratory results to
be rapidly distributed throughout the building from the
main lab on the first floor.
- A beeper system allows outpatients and their
families to move freely about the hospital until called
by the hospital staff. The beeper system also allows
hospital staff to update family members after a surgical
procedure.
- The Post Anesthesia Care Unit is centrally located,
a benefit for patients recovering from surgery, cardiac
catheterization, endoscopy and other procedures.
SRMC treats about 163,000 outpatients each year and
another 12,000 inpatients. The SRMC Website notes that the
facility is the sole "24-Hour Emergency Services-Only Trauma
Designated Hospital" in southern Virginia. SRMC had 45,000
emergency room and trauma patient visits in 2007.
Southside Regional Medical Center is the region’s largest
employer with more than 1,400 employees. At the time of the
July opening, SRMC's Website listed 188 active physicians,
34 consulting physicians, 59 courtesy physicians and 38
allied health professionals. Among the specialties listed
on the facility's Website: Advanced Imaging, Anesthesiology,
Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Dermatology, Emergency
Medicine, Family Practice, Gastroenterology, General
Surgery, Gynecology, Hematology / Oncology, Hospitalists /
Intensivists, Infectious Disease, Internal Medicine,
Minimally Invasive Surgery, Neonatology, Nephrology,
Neurology, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Oral / Maxillofacial
Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Pain
Management, Pathology, Pediatrics, Plastic Surgery,
Podiatry, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Radiation Oncology,
Rheumatology, Spine Surgery, Sports Medicine, Thoracic
Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery, and Wound Care. The
modern facility has its roots in the 1800s, when the
original hospital was established as the Petersburg Home for
the Sick on South Sycamore Street. The name was changed to
Petersburg Hospital in 1886. The facility took its current
name in 1986 in recognition of the surrounding community
that it serves. Besides Petersburg, SRMC regularly treats
patients from Hopewell, Colonial Heights, Fort Lee and
Chester as well as the counties of Prince George, Dinwiddie,
Sussex, Surry and southern Chesterfield. SRMC is one of
several hospitals in Southside Virginia. For your
convenience, the Cuthbert Law Offices Website has a
directory of other Southside VA health care facilities.
